| Caption | The Archipelago de Revillagigedo is a group of 4 volcanic islands lying about 300 miles due south of Cabo San Lucas and about 350 nautical miles due west of Puerto Vallarta. The only human settlements there are small naval bases on the main island of Socorro and another on Isla Clarion. They are part of a biospheric reserve, wherein all the water, land and surrounding airspaces are protected from any sort of human interference. The archipelago lies in the path of mnay of the hurricanes that make there way up alongside Mexico’s west coast from the Gulf of Tehuantepec on their way towards the tip of Baja California where the cooler waters usually sap the storms of their energy. The islands are under the jurisdiction of the State of Colima. Private permits and commercial tourist excursions there are rare. We went on a sailing boat called Nyamba and visited the camouflaged quarters of the base on Socorro occupied by research biologists. EJW appears to be enjoying the experience. |
